Everyone's Getting 'Skittle Nails' This Summer

Let your fingernails taste the rainbow…

It's summertime! The sun is shining, and we're sat in our gardens getting our bronze on.

And of course, nothing compliments a tan better than a new set of nails - which is why we're spending a lot of our time browsing nail ideas on Instagram.

One of the hottest new trends for your next manicure is 'Skittle Nails' - a simple but highly effective way of getting a pop of colour into all your looks this season.

How to achieve this? Well it's super simple. Firstly, make sure you stock up on classic rainbow colours - and for those of you can't remember ROYGBIV from GCSE Science days, those are: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.

We recommend using gel nail polish, as it tends to be slightly better for your nails - gel polish doesn't chip, so you can keep it on for longer than alternatives, and it can also add a layer of protection to stop your nails for breaking.

Once you've assembled your bold and bright colours, make sure to paint them in the order of the light spectrum, starting with red and then moving on to orange to create a whole rainbow effect.

Don't forget a transparent top coat for extra-long lasting nails and then, ta-da - your talons are fully Skittle-fied!

If you're slightly more adept at nail art, you can really jazz up your Skittle nails with a little rainbow, thanks to this tutorial courtesy of Superdrug.

If you fancy a full rainbow on your Skittle nails, start with a neutral base like a nude or pale pink. After applying a couple of coats, draw a zig zag diagonal line close to the tip of the nail with white nail varnish - think cloud shaped!

Once that's dried, then add a small purple streak up by the cloud. Again, once dried, add a pale blue stripe before following that up with a bright sunshine yellow.

To complete your adorable little rainbow, draw a red stripe. The key is to get as close to the cuticle as possible to create a rounded finish.

Finish off with transparent top coat to add gloss and you're done.

We can't wait to give the Skittle Nails trend a taste...
