Moisturiser is hardly the most exciting product in our beauty arsenal. We use it once or twice a day (or so we're meant to) to banish dryness before it returns to our dressing table where it stays. But according to makeup artist of the stars, Mary Greenwell, you should actually be packing it in your makeup bag - and for good reason.
Mary, who is responsible for Kendall Jenner's glowy, pared-back makeup looks, explains that moisturiser is key to keeping her clients' makeup looking fresh all night.
Of course, Mary always starts with moisturiser on before applying the base in every case, but it's what she does with it hours later that's really genius. When her clients' makeup is flagging later in the night, Mary will whack some moisturiser on top of the full face.
"I take some moisturiser, put it on the back of my hand, use a fluffy brush and buff the skin with it," she told Refinery29.
If you, like us, are thinking 'wait, won't that just rub off what's left of my foundation?' then Mary reckons it's quite the opposite. "It's basically like a magic eraser and rehydrates makeup without completely removing anything," she told the publication.
At this stage, you can decide to leave your newly-freshened skin as is with a nice dewy glow, or you can use it as the perfect base to apply a top-up of foundation or concealer.
We are definitely trying this for our next night out.
But that's not the only way Mary uses moisturiser as more than its intended purpose: she even lets it double-up as a highlighter.
"The whole point of highlighter is getting that pop of shine, not a stripe," explains Mary. "You don't really want to see the highlighter, more a glow from within."
To achieve this glow, Mary dabs moisturiser "down the centre and tip of the nose and pats a little on to the high points of the cheekbones," so that skin doesn't have that glittery sheen.
Mary's moisturiser of choice? Crème de la Mer. Only the best for the Kardashians, of course. But if you don't have £225 to spend on a moisturiser (hey, who does?) there are plenty out there that will work just as well.
Will you be using this hack?
