After teasing us with platinum blonde hair on Instagram, Zac Efron has finally unveiled his new 'do during a red carpet appearance.

While attending the Sundance Film Festival to promote his new film Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, the High School Musical alum finally took off his beanie to show off his bright blonde locks paired with his usual facial stubble.

The actor has chosen to keep his short beard and brows his usual brunette colour, but is now ice white on top.

Zac is remaining coy on why he decided to take the platinum blonde plunge, so it's unclear whether he's bleached it for an upcoming film role or if he just fancied a fresh new look.

One things for sure, the blonde isn't for his gig in his new film on serial killer Ted Bundy.

Zac has been cast in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile as the notorious murderer who sexually assaulted and brutally murdered many women and girls in the US in the 1970s - his total number of victims is thought to be more than 30.

The synopsis for the film reads: "A chronicle of the crimes of Ted Bundy, from the perspective of his longtime girlfriend, Elizabeth Kloepfer (Lily Collins), who refused to believe the truth about him for years."

Bundy was said to have gained the trust of several of his victims due to his handsome looks and utterly charismatic nature - so on that basis at least, Zefron seems ideal for the role.

The flick's trailer and premiere comes hot off the heels of Netflix's own docuseries on Bundy, featuring never-heard-before interviews with him while he was awaiting execution by electric chair on Death Row in Florida.

A number of social media users have criticised the movie for 'romanticising' Bundy, although Zac has already defended the decision to make it.

In March, he told Entertainment Tonight: "He wasn't a person to be glorified.

"It simply tells a story and sort of how the world was able to be charmed over by this guy who was notoriously evil and the vexing position that so many people were put in, the world was put in."
