Woman's Hat Changes Colour And People Can't Decide If It's Green Or Brown

Remember when 'The Dress' plunged the entire internet into existential crises back in 2015 - to the point where Wikipedia created an entire article on it?

The phenomenon had the world divided for what felt like an age, although we largely agreed we never wanted to discuss the hue of a clothing item ever again.

So, you'll be pleased to hear about the colour-changing hat that has exploded onto TikTok! Followers of one interior designer had split opinions between the accessory - is it brown, or green?

TikToker Otelia Carmen (@oteliacarmen) got an unwanted surprise when she went to purchase a green bobble hat, perfect for those frosty winter mornings.

When she arrived home, she removed the headwear from the bag. To her confusion, the colour of the hat had transformed into a coppery brown.

As an interior designer, she quickly realised what went wrong with the hat's changing complexion, explaining that lighting is "so important" when it comes to style.

Otelia used the word 'metamerism' to describe what was going on. This means an object may change colour depending on the light source falling onto it.

While the hat is brown and remains brown, the TikTok showed it instantly fading to green whenever it was held under 'cold' lighting.

Another video showed the content creator watching for the colour change in natural daylight. There, the beanie changed from copper to another, woodier brown in a split second.

People were baffled by the change, and just couldn't take their eyes away from it.

"What in the I could be brown I could be blue I could be violet sky" a second person joked, referring to our fave Mika song.

While someone else helpfully reminded us: "As a colour designer in apparel I can tell you it is SO important to double check your dyed materials under different light sources!"
