In bittersweet news, Netflix just renewed Lucifer for a fifth season, which is also set to be the devilish series' last.

The streaming giant originally picked up the series after it was dropped by Fox three seasons deep, and the fourth just hit the platform.

And now the series will be given a final drop of episodes to conclude the story starring Tom Ellis as Lucifer Morningstar.

Netflix announced the news in a statement on Thursday, saying it "can't wait to give them the big finish they've all been waiting for" and was "thrilled that Lucifer fans around the world have embraced this series on Netflix".

"We are so incredibly thankful to Netflix for resurrecting our show last season, and now letting us finish the story of Lucifer on our terms," showrunners Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich added in the statement.

They continued: "Most importantly, we want to thank the fans for their incredible passion and support. The best is yet to come!"

Lucifer's characters were created by Neil Gaiman for DC's Vertigo Imprint, and the show has gained a loyal fan-base who were all gutted when the show was cancelled by Fox.

It is expected that the series will again consist of 10 episodes like season four - when it ran on Fox, each series had 20.

Season four picked up up shortly after the major cliffhanger that season three left behind, which saw Chloe finally see Lucifer in his true devil form.

As per the streaming giant's official synopsis for season four: "Reeling from the aftermath of Chloe seeing his devil face, Lucifer faces a new challenge: Eve, the original sinner herself, is back.

"Does she want revenge for when he tempted her out of Eden oh so many years ago... or something else entirely?"

It's unclear when the new series will drop onto Netflix. But seeing as the fourth arrived in early May, it's most likely going to be a while to wait. Keep your eyes peeled for more information.
