EastEnders actor Jake Wood has announced he is leaving the soap after a 15-year stint.

The actor and Walford veteran, 48, who plays Max Branning, is waving goodbye to Albert Square.

But fear not, bosses have left the door open should he ever want to return.

Having joined the soap in 2006, fans have followed Jake and his character Max through the ups and the downs over the years, and he's gone from hero to villain to everybody's unlikely crush along the way.

He's been at the centre of some pretty massive storylines, too, from being framed for Lucy Beale's murder to his affair with Stacey Slater to Abi and Lauren Branning's departures.

Speaking in a statement on Wednesday, he said: "'I've had 15 wonderful years at EastEnders and have made some truly great friends.

"I'll of course miss everyone there but I'm grateful they have left the door open for Max and I'm excited to see what the next chapter holds".

On his exit, executive producer Jon Sen added: "Jake is a truly wonderful actor and EastEnders have been extremely lucky to have him for so long.

"We have a big storyline for Max that starts in the coming weeks and we are all very excited to see that play out."

Well, now we're intrigued...

We can expect to see Jake's final scenes on the soap later this year.

The actor's exit comes after he took a year-long break from the soap in 2015 so he could spend more time with his family, fitting in with his character Max's jail stint, for Lucy Beale's murder.

When he returned he was naturally hell-bent on revenge, but got in over his head as he attempted to reap havoc on the Beale family, and the whole storyline ended in the death of his daughter Abi on Christmas Day in 2017, when she fell off the roof the Queen Vic.

More recently, we've seen Max and Ian Beale at it once again.

When the show returned to screens last week, the pair were seen coming to blows over after the proceeds from Walford East.

We can't wait to see what EastEnders has in store for his exit.
