You Need To Read This Advice If You're Travelling To Greece This Summer

You Need To Read This Advice If You're Travelling To Greece This Summer

If you're heading to anywhere in Greece this summer then the government has some new advice you need to read.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) is recommending that travellers allow themselves more time for security checks on both outward and inward flights, because changes in the Schengen Borders Code regulation means delays at passport control are likely.

"As of April 7, 2019, the Hellenic Police [Greece's national police force] will begin implementing systematic passport control checks for all European citizens travelling to and from destinations outside the Schengen area (including the UK) in line with a 2017 Schengen Borders Code regulation," The FCO's advice states.

"Increased waiting times at passport control are possible on departure from and arrival into Greece. You should ensure you arrive at the airport in good time."

So, it turns out that whatever the outcome of UK's EU membership as parliament continues to debate Brexit, travellers need to factor in extra time at the airport.

For those who aren't familiar with the Schengen Area, it comprises 26 European states that have gotten rid of border controls at their mutual borders, instead option for a common visa policy meaning for easier travel.

The UK, along with Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Ireland and Romania, are not part of this area meaning they could face longer wait times at passport control going in and out of Greece.

So, whether it's a hen party to Mykonos or a couples' trip to sunny Crete, just make sure you plan those journeys ahead of time.
