Iceland To Open Up To Foreign Tourists Next Week

Iceland is the latest country to take the step in a bid to recover its economy.

Iceland has announced it will allow foreign travel from next month, as Prime minister Katrin Jakobsdottir revealed plans to open its borders.

It was initially thought that those travelling to the country would need to quarantine for two weeks, but now travellers will also get the option to be tested for Covid-19 when they arrive at the airport.

Until July 1st, tests at the airport will be free. From then on, each test will cost 15,000 ÍSK each (around £90). Iceland is set to announce more rules on testing imminently.

Results will usually be available on the same day - although, in some cases when passengers land in the evening, they may arrive the next day.

Local publication Iceland Monitor states that tourists will be allowed to travel to their accommodation while waiting for their results, and a Covid-19 negative test will mean that people will be free to enjoy a summer holiday on the island as planned.

However, if the test is positive, they must quarantine for 14 days.

Iceland's coronavirus pandemic has been a very different picture to ours. The country has population of around 364,000 people, and, at the time of writing, it has had only 1,807 confirmed cases of Covid-19 and 10 confirmed deaths.

While these announcements are exciting, it is important to note that the FCO currently advise against all but essential travel - so, it's not time for us UK dwellers to jet off just yet.

But there's no harm in looking at the deals available later in the year, so we're all prepped for whenever the rules are relaxed.

On LastMinute.com, you can find three night package holidays from London to Reykjavik at the start of August for under £200 (and there's all important hotel cancellation, should the worst come to the worst!).

Check out what they've got on offer here.

Plus, if you can wait until a little later in the year, Jet2holidays have a whole load of super-cheap holiday packages, too.

Fancy four nights in a central Reykjavik hotel towards the end of October? Prices start at £482. Come on...you know you want to treat yourself.

After all, we need something to get excited about, right?!
