Instagram is ending 2018 with a bang as it's just introduced a new update that's completely changed the way to scroll through your feed - instead of up and down you go left and right.

But people are not happy with the changes, with several saying it's 'awful' and they 'hate it'.

One posted: "Who else hates the new Instagram update?? I'm quite sad about it, calling it now, the outrage is gonna force them to change it before 2019 lol."

Another commented: "Thanks Instagram for ruining my life with this update this is wonderful."

Somebody else said: "I've seen a lot of shitty updates from @instagram, and I already hated the scroll feature in the Explore tab, so this new update really is the worst. Not the best best way to start 2K19."

A third tweeted: "Dear @instagram, if I wanted to swipe right, I'd get on Bumble. Sincerely, an angry millennial. But seriously... don't update your app."

The update replicates the Instagram stories which has been hugely successful for the company - taking on the success of Snapchat.

The use of stories has been so successful it's become almost twice as big as their rivals Snapchat.

However, some people have compared the swiping to the feature used on Tinder and aren't happy and one person said they're now done with the app all together.

"If my Instagram updates on its own then I'm deleting the app all together," it was tweeted.

Basically, there seems to be a resounding agreement on social media that users of the photo-based social media are very much pissed off with the changes.

Once updating a message telling app users of the change is appears saying: "Introducing a new way to move through posts.Tap through posts, just like you tap through stories."

Some Instagram users have found the update hasn't happened for their device yet, but this could be down to apps like Instagram staggering the release of their updates.

And one user pointed it it can, kind of, be avoided, they tweeted: "Hey, party people. If you're worried about this new Instagram update (and you have an iOS device), make sure this is turned off in Settings and it won't automatically update. #InstagramUpdate."

Most people who have been given the update started noticing this afternoon (UK time).
