Samsung's New Folding Phones Are 'Breaking Within Days'

Samsung is putting a twist on the nostalgia of noughties flip phones with the launch of foldable smartphones - but some users are already complaining that the technology is breaking during use.

The Galaxy Fold holds a 7.3 inch display and two touchscreens, coming with a hefty £1,530 ($2,000) price tag.

However, a number of journalists have been given early access to the smartphones ahead of their official launch date later this month, and some are reporting that the phones are breaking within just days.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman claimed on Twitter that the phone was 'completely broken' within two days.

He wrote: "The screen on my Galaxy Fold review unit is completely broken and unusable just two days in. Hard to know if this is widespread or not."

However, Gurman says he removed the protective layer, which Samsung says you're not supposed to - although it seems like it was a genuine error.

"The phone comes with this protective layer/film. Samsung says you are not supposed to remove it. I removed it, not knowing you're not supposed to (consumers won't know either). It appeared removable in the left corner, so I took it off. I believe this contributed to the problem," Gurman reasoned.

YouTuber Marques Brownlee said he also peeled off the film and had similar problems.

Other users are reporting faults despite not removing the protective film. According to The Verge's Dieter Bohn, a "small bulge" emerged in the crease of his phone, which he says "distorted" the screen.

"It's a distressing thing to discover just two days after receiving my review unit," he wrote. "More distressing is that the bulge eventually pressed sharply enough into the screen to break it."

Samsung is now 'thoroughly inspecting' the reported issues, and says it will make it clearer to users that they must not remove the protective film.

In a statement given to The Verge, the tech giant said: "A limited number of early Galaxy Fold samples were provided to media for review. We have received a few reports regarding the main display on the samples provided. We will thoroughly inspect these units in person to determine the cause of the matter.

"Separately, a few reviewers reported having removed the top layer of the display causing damage to the screen. The main display on the Galaxy Fold features a top protective layer, which is part of the display structure designed to protect the screen from unintended scratches.

"Removing the protective layer or adding adhesives to the main display may cause damage. We will ensure this information is clearly delivered to our customers."
