Today Is Officially The Hottest Day Ever Recorded In February
Today is officially the hottest day ever recorded in Britain during February. As temperatures soar to heights of 20.3C at Trawsgoed, Ceredigion in Wales, The Met Office has revealed it's the warmest the UK has ever been at this time of year.
The forecaster wrote in a tweet: "It's also the first time we've ever recorded over 20 degrees in winter."
It's the warmest day of the year so far, with 19.3 °C recorded already in Trawsgoed. That also makes it the warmest February day ever recorded in Wales; there is a chance we could beat the UK record of 19.7 °C :thermometer:️ pic.twitter.com/rkDG7XbF3s- Met Office (@metoffice) February 25, 2019
Previously, 19.7C was the warmest temperature ever recorded in February in the UK, in Greenwich, London in 1998.
Wales broke the record this lunchtime at around 12.30pm when the temperature reached 19.3C, before beating its own record when it tipped 20C just half an hour later.
The unheard-of sizzling winter temperatures are said to be a result of the Foehn Effect. According to the Met Office, the Foehn Effect is a 'change from wet and cold conditions one side of a mountain, to warmer and drier conditions on the other (leeward) side.'
As a result, this causes condensation the different air currents mix while being warmed by the sun.

People up and down the country have been out and about enjoying the temperatures which are around 10C hotter than average across Britain.
Unfortunately for sun worshippers, the unseasonably warm weather isn't expected to last beyond the middle of the working week.
"Monday and Tuesday will be the last of the very mild days with temperatures coming back to average levels after that," a spokesperson for the Met Office said.
This time last year was a very different story as many parts of the UK were covered with snow after feeling the effects of the Beast from the East.
