A woman from China almost died at 35 weeks pregnant because her baby kicked a hole in her womb.

According to the New York Post earlier this month the woman who's only known as Zhang started to experience severe stomach pains and was coming out in a cold sweat and a racing pulse.

She took herself to A&E at Peking University Shenzhen Hospital in China and an ultrasound revealed that her unborn baby girl had kicked her leg through the wall of the womb and into the abdominal cavity, where her thighs became stuck.

The doctors were worried about the risk of internal bleeding so they had to operate and deliver the baby by caesarean.

When operating the surgeons found blood in the Zhang's stomach, along with a 7cm hole in the wall of her uterus.

Doctors checked her medical history and it was discovered that she had an operation to removed fibroids from her uterus the year before and because of this there was a weak spot where the scar was and when the baby kicked that area it broke through.

Following the caesarean doctors confirmed that mother and baby are both doing well.

A rupture of the uterus during pregnancy is a rare complication, but can it prove to be life-threatening.

They are more common at the site of an old C-section scar and most uterine ruptures will happen when the mother is already in labour.

Mums who have previously had surgery to remove fibroids or to correct a misshapen womb are also at greater risk of the complication.

These mums-to-be should speak to their specialists about their concerns and the options they have to ensure both they and their baby are safe.
