PurGym has been forced to apologise over a Twelve Years A Slave themed workout.

The gym giant announced the new workout on Monday to coincide with Black History Month, describing it has 'hard' and comparing it to slavery.

Posting from the dedicated Facebook page for their Luton & Dunstable branch, they wrote: "Entitled '12YearsOfSlave' (after the epic movie) this is our workout of the month designed by @mattsimpt to celebrate black history month."

The workout drew widespread condemnation (

It added: "Slavery was hard and so is this. The twist to this is 1 rep of your 1st exercise, 2 of the second but before you move on to the 3rd exercise which is also 3 reps you must start at the beginning to move on. AND that's how the entire workout goes."

Many took to social media to express their fury over the post, with one person tweeting: "I just wanna know who woke up this morning and decided comparing a workout to slavery was a good way to commemorate Black history month... Has 2020 not happened at Pure Gym?"

Another wrote: "I don't even know where to start on this one. Wrong, insensitive and horrendous on all levels. You have no idea what Black History Month actually represents. You should be ashamed."

PureGym later apologised for the "wholly unacceptable" post on their Facebook page.

The workout was inspired by 12 Years A Slave (

They said: PureGym apologises unreservedly for a post regarding Black History Month that was made today by our gym in Luton & Dunstable. This post was wholly unacceptable, was not approved or endorsed by the company and was removed when it was brought to our attention.

"We take this matter extremely seriously and are urgently investigating how and why this post was made. Thank you to those people who commented on this post and for raising this with us."

They later apologised on their Facebook page (
