Heroes of the Covid-19 pandemic have been honoured in the 2021 New Years Honours list.

From NHS staff to teachers, police officers and members of the community, a fifth of the awards - 231 in total - have gone to those leading the fight against the virus.

This includes Nurse Lynne Grieves, who - in an effort not to pass Covid-19 on to her 82-year-old mother - moved into the care home where she works in order to help residents.

Lynne receives the British Empire Medal, as does retired nurse Cath Fitzsimmons who returned to join frontline staff with 40 years' experience.

Meanwhile, Head of Nursing in Swansea, Carol Doggett, has accepted an MBE on behalf of staff and intensive care patients at Morriston Hospital.

Retired police officer Mark Owen has also accepted an MBE (

Also representing our brilliant health care workers is Prof Greta Westwood who set up a support service, Nightingale Frontline, which has been used by 1,500 nurses.

Meanwhile Prof Wendy Burn highlighted the need of PPE, warning that the virus could sweep through mental health facilities like it did with care homes.

Also receiving an MBE is deputy director of nursing Jacky Copping, who initiated a PPE face fit testing regime. Elsewhere, retired police officer Mark Owen has also accepted an MBE after he returned to lead the Special Constabulary's response in North Wales.

A huge chunk of the awards, 65 per cent, have gone to those who have made a difference in their community.

Caroline Halfhide from Suffolk, has accepted an MBE for transforming her pub into a village shop, to help those in need during the pandemic.

Meanwhile Jennifer Sims, founder and CEO of Pembrokeshire Frame, receives a BEM for her #Bagsofcare Community Fridge Free Bags Scheme.

The initiative provides hot meals and food bags to the vulnerable and those struggling financially.

Also receiving a BEM is charity helpline housing adviser for Shelter, Nadeem Khan. Nadeem was unable to return to the UK because of the pandemic, but worked remotely from a rooftop in Pakistan where he helped over 500 people (5,000 miles away!) in three months.

The oldest person to receive an award is charity volunteer Anne Baker, aged 106, who receives an MBE for fundraising for the NSPCC during the pandemic.

Meanwhile, 104-year-old Ruth Saunders has also been recognised for her services to charity after walking a marathon in a bid to raise funds for Thames Valley Air Ambulance.

The youngest person to receive an award is 20-year-old Samah Khalil, the Youth Mayor of Oldham who receives a BEM for her inspirational and dedicated work in empowering other young people.

Congratulations to all, these are so well deserved.
