A Body Has Been Found In The Search For Missing 'Glee' Star Naya Rivera
A body has been found in the search for Glee star Naya Rivera.
The Ventura County Sheriff's Department tweeted on Monday morning (local time) to confirm the sad news, saying: "Happening now: A body has been found at Lake Piru this morning. The recovery is in progress. A news conference will take place at 2 pm at the lake."
The 33-year-old was the subject of a desperate search and rescue operation after she rented a boat on Lake Piru in Ventura County, California, last Wednesday.
Mother-of-one Naya, who played Satana Lopez in the Fox high school drama, is reported to have driven to the lake with her four-year-old son, Josey Hollis, and rented the boat at around 1pm.
A group of concerned visitors had contacted police after spotting Josey asleep alone in the boat.
The youngster later told police that the pair had been swimming, but that Naya never got back into the boat. Police admitted that interrogating a toddler was a "challenge" and they were struggling to understand the exact details around Naya's disappearance.
Seargeant Kevin Donoghue later added: "Our first day was a rescue effort, it was a life saving effort. We searched with people on the ground, on the shoreline. We were looking not just for her physically, we were looking for any clues, any evidence that suggested she made it to shore.
"We didn't find any clues, any evidence that suggested she made it to shore. The most conclusive piece of evidence we're really holding on to right now is the statements from her son, the only witness.
"He observed his mother disappear beneath the water so we are very confident she is in the water and that at some point in time we will recover her from the lake."
Rescue dive teams, drones and helicopters were dispatched to the scene, but the search was halted at dusk due to failing conditions.
Captain Eric Buschow, of the Ventura County Sheriff's Office, said last week: "We're going on the belief that she did go in the water, and we've not been able to locate her. This may well be a case of drowning."
He added: "This is a big reservoir, it's deep, these kinds of things happen. We don't know all the circumstances. Investigators are working on that, getting as much information as possible."
The lake had been closed to the public as dive teams throughout the region joined in the search operation.
Just over a week ago Naya had posted a touching image on social media with her son writing: "Just the two of us."
Naya - who starred in Glee from 2009 to 2015, welcomed her son five years ago, with her then husband Ryan Dorsey. The pair split two years ago, in 2018.
Our thoughts are with Naya's family at what must be an unbearable time.
