Police have explained they believe that Glee star Naya Rivera "mustered enough strength to save her son but not herself" when the pair were swimming in Lake Piru last Wednesday.

Yesterday, Ventura County Sheriff's Department held a press conference where they announced they were confident that a body they had found in the lake was 33-year-old Naya.

Discussing the circumstances surrounding Naya's death, Sheriff Bill Ayub said it was possible Naya had found the energy to help her son back into the pontoon boat, but was unable to save herself.

He explained: "We know from speaking with her son that he and Naya swam in the lake together at some point in their journey.

"It was during that time that her son described being helped into the boat by Naya, who boosted him onto the deck from behind. He told investigators that he looked back and saw her disappear beneath the water."

During press questions at the end of the announcement, Ayub added: "We believe it was mid-afternoon when she disappeared.

"The idea perhaps being that the boat started drifting, it was unanchored, and that she mustered enough energy to get her son back into the boat, but not enough to save herself."

They added that there was no suspicion of suicide or foul play.

Naya had rented a boat for her and her four-year-old son, Josey, to take out onto the lake at around 1pm on Wednesday last week.

But just hours later, Josey was found in the boat asleep by himself, along with Naya's life jacket, ID and purse. Naya was nowhere to been.

The police were notified and a search began. At the time, Josey told police that the pair had been swimming, but that Naya never got back into the boat.

Since the news was announced yesterday, there has been an outpouring of love for Naya.

One person wrote on Twitter: "Heartbreaking to hear the police report confirming that they've found Naya Rivera. She used the last of her energy to save her son's life. She died a mother and a hero. RIP Naya."

Another person added: "The fact that #nayarivera risked her life to save her son rather then saving herself shows how great of a mother she was. her son is alive because of her. she was amazing till the end. rest in peace naya."

Our thoughts are with Naya's family and friends.
