Meghan Markle's friend has claimed she emailed a royal aide to ask if they could "set the record straight" after reports suggested she had made Kate Middleton cry over dresses for the wedding.

Omid Scobie, the author of Finding Freedom - which follows the Sussexes' decision to quit royal life - claimed the palace ignored Meghan's request because they did not want Kate to be "dragged into idle gossip".

Writing in Harpers Bazaar, Omid claimed that Prince Harry was asked to co-sign a statement refuting reports that Prince William had "constantly bullied" the Sussexes before their decision to step away from royal duties.

Meghan then emailed Kensington Palace asking them to "set the record straight" about the pre-wedding disagreement - which flooded the news in the months after the wedding suggesting Meghan made Kate cry, Omid says.

The alleged email read: "Well, if we're just throwing any statement out there now, then perhaps KP can finally set the record straight about me [not making Kate cry]."

Her request, sent last January, was allegedly ignored by the palace who said that the Duchess of Cambridge should not be dragged into "idle gossip", according to Omid.

In Meghan's interview with Oprah Winfrey this week, Meghan attempted to set the record straight regarding the disagreement over dresses and claimed had Kate made her cry.

Recalling the incident, Meghan explained: "A few days before the wedding she was upset about something - the flower girl dresses - and it made me cry and it hurt my feelings.

"And I thought, in the context of everything else that was going on in the days before the wedding, it didn't make sense to make an issue given everything else going on with my dad and whatnot."

She went on: "There wasn't a confrontation and I don't think its fair to her to get into the details of that because she apologised and I've forgiven her.

"Everyone in the institution knew [the story about Kate crying] wasn't true."
