You Can Now Get Compensation For Slow Broadband And We're Going Shopping

There's nothing worse than having rubbish Internet connection, especially when you're mid way through a really nailbiting Netflix show or in the midst of some serious Internet shopping. Or working from home - yeah, that too.

Nothing kills the mood like a 'sorry this page can't be reached' message.

But what if we told you you could actually be compensated for all those lost minutes trying to reconnect to your router?

In April, rules by Ofcom came into force that required broadband providers to give customers an estimated broadband speed and a minimum speed before taking out a contract with them. Companies also had to and allow customers to walk away from contracts within 30 days of taking it out if the provider fails to meet this speed.

In terms of compensation, providers are required to give compensation if wifi connection is lost completely or if an engineer fails to show up - but there is nothing in place for connections that simply run slow. And as we know, this happens all...the...time.

However, some companies - including Sky, BT, Vodafone and Openreach - are keeping customers sweet by promising compensation if guaranteed broadband speeds aren't met.

And they're sticking to their word: according to Ofcom, Openreach for one have sent over a million messages to their customers to understand whether compensation is due. Good going.

If you're plagued by an awful internet connection and haven't yet claimed for compensation, here's how to do it.

Vodafone customers can get compensation if they are on one of two packages: Superfast 1, which offers an average download speed of 35mbps and a guaranteed minimum speed of 25mbps for £23 per month, and Superfast 2 offering an average download speed of 65mbps and a guaranteed minimum speed of 55mbps for £26 per month.

If you're on one of these package and your speed does drop lower than the guarantees, you can claim 15 per cent discount on your monthly bill through the Vodafone Home app. Sorted.

BT customers will want to know about the company's BT Stay Fast guarantee, where customers can get compensated if their lowest guaranteed speed - given on an individual basis - doesn't match up.

First, BT will ask customers to confirm their speed using their online speed checker, and if it falls below par, the provider will try to fix the speed remotely or send an engineer out.

Sky customers get one better. If you're a Sky Broadband Boost customer (which costs an extra £5 per month), the company will guarantee a speed achieved in your home while using wifi as opposed to just your router, as the other companies do. This is applicable to all Sky packages.

If your connection falls below the minimum speed, Sky will post a wifi extender for free, and if the problem persists, an engineer will be set out to guarantee the speed in all of your rooms.

If you still have no luck, Sky will refund the cost of Broadband Boost for the remainder of the contract.

Customers who take out Sky's Superfast package can even claim back a one month's subscription fee and any set-up costs if claimed within 30 days.
