The UK is bring urged to stand at their doorways tonight and give a round of applause to the brave and heroic NHS staff on the frontline of the coronavirus crisis.

Organised by Clap for our Carers, the mass display of appreciation is set to take place at 8pm tonight (Thursday 26th March) in a bid to honour the doctors, GPS, nurses, pharmacists and emergency services taking care of COVID-19 patients during these strange and scary times.

"During these unprecedented times they need to know that we are grateful," organisers of the event said, explaining the sweet idea.

"Please join us on 26 March for a big applause to show all who are working at the front line our appreciation for their ongoing hard work and fight against this virus.

"Please share this message so we can make sure the work spreads and reaches all to join."

Those taking part in the tribute are also being asked to film or live stream the event from their phones, sharing it online with the hashtag #clapforourcarers.

Of course, it's important you're standing at least two metres away from your neighbour or anybody who isn't in your household for both your safety.

The initiative is just one way in which the public have been showing their appreciation for NHS staff of late.

Supermarkets like Sainsbury's, Asda and Tesco have brought in dedicated hours for medical workers to ensure they don't go without, while a whole range of eateries from Costa to Starbucks to Greggs offered freebies to the NHS ahead of the lockdown.

And it's not just food outlets offering discounts, MissGuided is offering 40 per cent off for all NHS staff, too. Result!

If this pandemic has shown us one thing, it's who the real heroes of society are.

We'll certainly be applauding them at 8pm. See you all there.
