Morrisons has been praised for launching an initiative in one of its stores which offers shoppers free period products, should they need it.

The aim is to help anybody who can't afford period products discreetly, in a bid to tackle period poverty.

All they have to do is go up to the front desk and 'Ask For Sandy', should they want to be offered sanitary items free of charge.

Shoppers became aware of the scheme after a flyer from the store made its way onto social media.

"Please don't feel shy. If you are in need or struggling for sanitary products go to our Customer Service Kiosk... and ask for a package that SANDY has left for you," it read.

"You will be given a FREE discreet envelope with what you need, no questions asked.

While the scheme is not yet running nationwide, Morrisons has since confirmed that it is considering rolling it out across the country.

The supermarket added that right now people should check with their local store to see if they are taking part.

The news will be welcome, seeing as period products are leaving women out of pocket month on month, and many are still left forced to go without.

In fact, research has shown that one in 10 girls across the UK have at one point been unable to afford period products.

Plus, double have used a less suitable product because they can't front the cost.

Period poverty has been a major topic of conversation in the UK in recent years - largely since activist Amika George launched her #FREEPERIODS campaign in 2017.

In March this year, the government finally announced that sanitary products would be available for free in schools.

But a survey also shows that the majority of participants feel the government could still do more, and should make menstrual products free for everybody across the board, like they are in Scotland.

Here's hoping more supermarkets follow suit soon!
