Care Home Launches Coronavirus ‘Adopt A Grandparent’ Scheme

Care Home Launches Coronavirus ‘Adopt A Grandparent’ Scheme

With the UK on lockdown in a bid to slow down the spread of coronavirus, we're all going to have to learn to live out our friendships virtually for a little while.

And while that might be a walk in the park for the young, it's particularly important that we don't leave the elderly behind when they need us more than ever.

That's why we're obsessed with this new digital 'adopt a grandparent' scheme from Surrey based care home group, CHD Living.

The scheme - encouraging people to spend time with one of their elderly residents - has actually been in place since last year.

However, in light of new social distancing guidelines, they're now looking for volunteers to interact with their occupants online, instead.

The campaign, which runs across all 13 of their branches, originally saw children and adults who don't have grandparents of their own forge meaningful new relationships with the care home residents.

And now it is looking for new 'virtual volunteers,' keen to do the same, but through a computer screen.

The plan is that 'virtual volunteers' will use an especially provided Facebook Portal TV to make video calls, offering the very same companionship the residents are used to getting from face-to-face interaction.

You'll also both be encouraged to send and relieve drawings, poetry and letters, so that you can stay in touch.

It sounds so simple, but these could really make somebody's day.

Shaleeza Hasham, Head of Hospitality, Communications & Commissioning at CHD Living, said: "The nature of care means that we're looking after some of the most vulnerable members of society at the moment.

"It's a worrying time and we're taking the threat of coronavirus incredibly seriously, putting stringent processes and protocols in place to protect our residents as much as possible.

"We are however keen to keep spirits in the homes high and so have been thinking of ways that we can continue to enrich the lives of our residents whilst providing them with stimulation and companionship.

"It made sense at this time to digitise the Adopt a Grandparent campaign and to recruit further volunteers who might like to help keep our residents company over the coming weeks. It will be a wonderful distraction for everyone involved".
