Woman Vows Never To Use Wooden Spoon Again After Grim Discovery

*Throws away all wooden spoons*.

A woman has vowed to throw away her wooden spoons after revealing a stomach-churning photograph of what happened when she left one to soak.

The mum, from Australia, shared a trick for cleaning wooden utensils - but after seeing the results for herself, decided to chuck it away instead.

The woman said she would be chucking her spoon away (

Following a tip from a celebrity chef, she shared her experience on Facebook group, Mums Who Cook, Clean and Organise - Australia - Australia, writing: "A tip I learned from Matt Preston years ago.

"Does anyone soak their wooden spoons in boiling water? Mine always go into the dishwasher every night but that doesn't stop what gets absorbed."

Alongside a snap of a wooden spoon sitting in a murky, greasy jug of water, she added that it was "revolting really" and that it would be going straight in the bin.

Matt Preston's original method recommended buying a silicon spatula instead. He told Delicious: "On the surface a perfect present but stick an old one in a cup of boiling water to see what fate awaits all wooden spoons.

"Give it a sniff. Phew, stinky! And you were going to stir your custard with that.

"Ask for a $10 silicon spatula instead. They're hygienic, heat-resistant and flexible, so they are great for getting into the corner of a pan or getting every last skerrick out of a bowl."

Now we think about it, the thought of using a wooden spoon straight out of the dishwasher does make us feel a bit queasy.

Others were grossed out, too, with one woman explaining she leaves her wooden spoons out in the sunlight instead - although that could prove to be a little more difficult over in the UK, especially this week!

Others weren't convinced, with one pointing out they'd never been unwell from using a wooden spoon before. Fair enough, but we're not sure we'll be able to enjoy our baked goods in the same way again...
