A retail park in Cheshire have been left collectively red-faced today after security couldn't locate the right key to let queues of shoppers in the carpark for the grand reopening - all on live TV.

Today, Cheshire Oaks Shopping Centre was preparing to let hundreds of shoppers in at 10am on the first day of the government's reopening of non-essential shops.

With a queue of cars curling down the road and round the nearby roundabout, BBC News reporter Sean Farrington was on the scene to watch the action unfold.

After speaking with shoppers at the front of the queue, Sean quickly wrapped up his interviews to head to the barrier as the hour approached 10am.

"This is going to be quite a scene today for quite a lot of people," he says as cars begin to start up their engines and the camera panned to the security worker who is fiddling with the keys.

"There is the moment-," the reporter says, before stopping short.

After a few tense moments, the big reopening falls majorly flat when the staff member hilariously can't locate the right key.

That's live TV for you!

When the presenters in the studio quiz Sean for an update on 'key gate', he jokes the situation has been "escalated" as he assures them the security workers are still "all pretty calm" despite the gaff.

"This is a lot earlier than I think a lot of them were expecting to open up," he explains.

Linking back to the studio, the BBC Breakfast hosts joke: "You wait for three months to open a gate and then you're opening the gate and you can't find the right key!"

At the end of last month, the Prime Minister announced that all non essential shops will re-open from today.

In a move to boost the economy, shops like clothing and homeware stores will open, joining outdoor markets and car showrooms, which opened on June 1st.

The change in guidance comes as the government seeks to reduce the lockdown regulations further, following successful attempts to reduce the R rate and keep infection levels down.

The Prime Minister said that the government would be issuing the retail sector strict guidance they would have to adhere to in order to reopen, "detailing the measures they should take to meet the necessary social distancing and hygiene standards".

Despite Cheshire Oaks gaff, we can now confirm that staff have since found the key and the shopping centre has finally allowed shoppers in.

Phew!
