Trigger warning: This article contains allegations of physical abuse.

People are divided over Kate Moss's testimony in the ongoing defamation trial between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp.

In a brief testimony via videolink on Wednesday (25 May), British supermodel Kate Moss told the court that ex-boyfriend Depp never abused her, despite Heard claiming she had heard a rumour that Depp had pushed Moss down a flight of stairs during their relationship.

Rather, Moss said that Depp helped her after the slipped down the stairs while they were at the GoldenEye resort in Jamaica.

"We were leaving the room and Johnny left the room before I did and there had been a rainstorm," she said.

"As I left the room I slid down the stairs and I hurt my back and I screamed because I didn't know what had happened to me.

"He came running back to help me and carried me to my room and got me medical attention."

When asked further if Depp had pushed her, she said: "No, he never pushed me, kicked me or threw me down any stairs."

Since Moss addressed the court, people have been divided over the testimony, with many questioning its relevancy.

One person wrote on Twitter: "So Depp’s team will call Kate Moss to say he never pushed her down the stairs. Ok. So what? So he never pushed HER doesn’t mean he never pushed anyone else."

Another said: "Why does it matter what his exes say? Even if he was good to them, it doesn't mean he didn't abuse AH."

A third added: "Just because one woman never had the same experience it doesn’t mean the experience did not happen."

One social media user wrote: "I just heard Kate Moss’s evidence on the news. I haven’t followed the trial at all and so have no idea re who is telling the truth.

"But annoyed that just because a man wasn’t violent with one partner is supposed to be proof that he wasn’t violent against another."

Others felt adamant that it could 'prove' Depp's innocence, with one person adding: "I admire Kate Moss for her courage and determination.

"The fact that she has agreed to testify on behalf of Johnny Depp, decades after they dated, speaks volumes. Not only did she confirm that he didn’t harm her but confirmed he helped her get medical help."

A second said: "Kate Moss has never testified in any court proceedings before. The fact that she agreed to testify on behalf of Johnny Depp, thirty years after they dated, speaks volumes."

Depp’s team called Moss as a witness to discuss the incident after Heard mentioned the supermodel in her testimony.

Heard discussed Moss on the stand on 5 May, when she spoke to the court about an alleged fight in March 2015 in which she claimed she punched Depp in the face over fears he would push her sister Whitney down the stairs.

Heard testified: “[Whitney’s] back was to the staircase, and Johnny swings at her. I don’t hesitate, I don’t wait – I just, in my head, instantly think of Kate Moss and stairs and I swung at him.”

Depp, 58, is suing Heard, 36, in a $50 million (£40.1million) defamation lawsuit over abuse claims she made in a piece for The Washington Post in 2018.

Depp’s legal team argue that the article implies Heard was physically and sexually abused by Depp when they were married, although the article does not mention him by name.

Heard formally rested her case on Tuesday (24 May), which means her legal team has finished explaining their case and are ready for the judge or jury to decide on the outcome.

The trial is expected to conclude this week.
