Kate Garraway has revealed her husband's first word was "pain" as he recovers from a severe coronavirus battle.

Derek Draper, 53, has been in hospital since March after suffering Covid-19 symptoms, and still remains seriously ill.

Speaking on today's edition of Lorraine, Garraway, also 53, became emotional as she described when doctor told her that Draper managed to speak for the first time, having been locked in a medically-induced coma as the virus ravaged his body.

"You don't want your husband to feel pain, you dread for pain," she said. "You didn't know what he was feeling.

"The brilliant doctors and nurses, and all the teams, constantly talk to him like he can hear, which is the right thing to do, since he's been in a coma," Garraway continued.

"They told him, 'We're going to move your leg, let us know if you're in discomfort or pain,' and then he whispered, 'Pain.'

"It wasn't particularly a sound, it was a mouthing of air. But it was very clear, and then I saw it again as well."

Garraway has been married to former political lobbyist Draper, for 15 years. The pair share two children: Darcey, 14, and 11-year-old William.

The presenter added they are "hoping for a second miracle" and are waiting for Draper to recover.

"It's very difficult because, this could be it," she said. "I keep myself very much in check and stop myself from crying because we still don't know.

"Derek is still in there, he is locked away. I believe he is still in there. That's a long way from being Derek with his multiple words of colour with all the love, but it's a start.

"There's still a long road to go, and we still don't know how far down that road he can come."
