The Northern Lights - a natural, multicoloured light display caused by collisions between particles of the sun and the earth's atmosphere - are usually only able to be seen in places far more north than the UK. However, this weekend people in Scotland will be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of this natural light show.

The Met Office Space Weather Operations Centre has said that people would be able to see the lights in the UK on Saturday.

This is because of a space storm that is flaring up on the surface of the sun. As electrons and protons blow over the Earth's atmosphere on solar winds, scientists are able to accurately predict through measuring sun spots when the lights will be at their strongest, and it looks like this weekend will be especially bright.

Forecasts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the US show the strongest storms will be between 3pm to 9pm on Saturday night which is when the Northern Lights will be most visible.

To get the best glimpse of the lights, it's best to avoid areas that are free of cloud, rain and light pollution. Large and built up areas can also spoil the show.

Scotland occasionally does gets to peek at the northern lights, however they are better seen from places in Scandinavia in the optimum months of September to April.

Tromso in Norway is in the heart of the northern lights zone and is easily accessed from the UK in just over 3 hours. With lots of pubs and bars, it's a great place to enjoy the light show whilst sipping cocktails.

Iceland is also a popular choice, offering geothermal pools and volcanic tours.

You can also head over the pond to Yukon Canada, a place with a generous amount of wild, untouched nature.

Wherever you go, this is definitely an experience to add to your bucket list.
