Gabby Petito's stepfather has described the devastating moment he knew his stepdaughter was dead.

Tragically, Gabby's body was discovered last month after she went missing following a road trip with her fiancé Brian Laundrie, who returned from their trip alone.

Gabby's stepdad Jim Schmidt says as soon as police described Gabby's sweatshirt, he knew it was her.

Speaking to Dr Phil, Jim said: "They described a piece of clothing to me that matched one of her favourite sweatshirts that we knew was hers.

"It was from a local store, so we knew it was hers.”

Gabby's parents along with both of her stepparents took part in the heartbreaking chat with Dr Phil, where they branded Laundrie - who has been missing for weeks - 'a coward'.

Gabby's mum Nichole added: “Someone needs to start talking.”

It's believed Laundrie returned home alone at the beginning of September, with Gabby's parents reporting her missing 10 days later.

Police subsequently confirmed that a body found in a Wyoming National Park was the missing YouTuber. Now, the FBI has ruled that Gabby's death was a 'homicide' - however Laundrie, who refused to speak to the police, is still missing.

He is a person of interest in the case and there is also a warrant for his arrest, after he was accused of using another person's bank card around the time Gabby went missing.

The couple had been living in the campervan while travelling across the States, with their journey documented on social media.

Earlier this week, hiker Dennis Davis insisted that he met Laundrie while exploring the Appalachian Trail last weekend.

Dennis, 53, says he was waved down on the trail on 2nd October by a 'dazed' Laundrie who said he had to get to California to see his partner as the couple had had a fight.

“There is no doubt in my mind I spoke to Brian Laundrie - none whatsoever,” said Dennis, the New York Post reports.

“He said ‘man, I’m lost.’ I said ‘what are you trying to find?’ and he said ‘me and my girlfriend got in a fight but she called me, told me she loves me, and I have to get to California to see her.’
