A new Good Food Guide has revealed the top restaurants in the UK and the better news is, some won't tug too hard at the purse strings.

The Waitrose and Partners Good Food Guide 2020 has highlighted the best 1,200 places to eat and nearly a third of them are priced at £30 or less for a three course meal.

L'Enclume in Cumbria has taken the number one spot with full marks of 10/10, with Simon Rogan as head chef.

On the restaurant's website, he comments on his menu: "Ingredients that change with the seasons inspire my menu development and ensure a truly traceable dining experience reflecting my farm to table philosophy".

The sample menu includes inspired and quirky offerings from truffle dumplings and pork and eel with ham fat to start.

Other courses on the sample menu include native lobster with broad beans and elderflower as well as raspberry and sweet cicely tart.

This is certainly not one of the cheaper places on the list, with a tasting menu costing £155, with another £80-£120 on top for wine pairings.

In fact, most of the top 50 have Michelin stars and aren't in the affordable bracket, including second place restaurant Core by Clare Smyth, run by the first female British chef to hold and retain three Michelin stars.

However, some lower down the list supposedly offer fabulous food at great value for money.

One of those restaurants is Paul Ainsworth at No 6 in Cornwall, which ranked 40th.

Although it offers up an à la carte menu that is on the pricey side, it also offers a set autumn menu that is £34 for three courses.

Slightly lower down the list, is Peg in Hackney which offers really good value for money.

Elizabeth Carter, Editor of The Good Food Guide by Waitrose & Partners, said: "This year's Best New Entry for London, Peg in Hackney, proves that it's not just grand dining rooms being celebrated by the Guide.

"'An exciting little place, this cool Hackney newcomer offers beautiful, low-budget dishes, prepared with a precision that the paper napkins and reusable bamboo plates belie."

She added: "With diners increasingly looking for flexible eating options and value for money, there has been a surge in inexpensive cafés and restaurants that rank quality of ingredients above all else.

"Small, owner-run dining rooms across the country provide clear examples of how they can and do work in direct opposition to the pizza-burger overload on the British high street."
