In an equally unlikely and adorable twist of fate, two little ducklings have become best friends with a Yorkshire Terrier pup.

The baby ducks made a canine companion after being rescued from certain death outside a duck meat farm in Bulgaria, and now the trio are inseparable.

The pair were found in Pavlikeni, Bulgaria, by Boris Bozhinov, 36 - a TV producer who was working in the area - earlier this year.

They were later re-homed with a kindly family and their pet Yorkie Daria, who eventually became their BFF.

"I was working in this town called Pavlikeni when I saw these sweet little ducklings all alone on the street," Boris recalled. "There is a duck meat farm just near there and at the farm they keep only the male ducklings, because they grow bigger than females...so only the males' meat is valuable for them.

"Sadly, the females are thrown out on the garbage, they're small and vulnerable so they usually get eaten alive by predators or they die of hunger or cold on the street."

Boris keeps his own pet duck, named Shushi, in his house in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, so is all too familiar with just how much personality and quality of life the little creatures can really have.

Scooping up the two baby ducks and putting them in a box until he finished his day's work, it was thanks to his kindness that the pair are so happy in their new home today.

The TV producer vowed to find the ducklings a safe and happy home, so he cradled them in his arms on the 250 km (155 mile) car journey back to Sofia before bestowing them on a family he knows through work.

"They were crying and were not very happy inside the box, so once I was done with work, I took them in my hands and they calmed down," he said.

"I know how to handle baby ducks because of my pet Shushi. Once they felt secure, they fell asleep.

"My colleague was driving the car and the ducklings slept peacefully in my arms for most of the journey.

"I thought about keeping them myself, but I already have a pet duck".

The humans in the family bonded with the ducklings immediately, but their seven-year-old dog Daria was a little more apprehensive.

"It was really funny to see the ducklings meet the Yorkie, we didn't know what was going to happen," he added.

But before long, the ducklings ended up stalking Daria - and were clearly a fan of her.

"The dog seemed very confused," Boris reflected. "They soon got used to each other though. Daria is a very friendly dog, she is a good girl, I can confirm."
