Justin Bieber has come under fire from his Instagram followers after sharing a post at the weekend defending Chris Brown, by calling his past actions a "mistake".

The 'gram post in question read: "The Legendary Equation" featuring Michael Jackson, 2Pac and Chris Brown. "MJ plus Tupac equals CB." A comment suggested that this image was originally created by Nick Cannon.

In the caption, Justin said: "Everyone wants to wait til people die To give them the credit they deserve.

"I'm calling it now when CB passes away after a long full life, you will miss what you had in front of you the whole time ... trust me watch you will see. the people who have over looked this mans talent because of a mistake he made.. you need to reevaluate! Love you @chrisbrownofficial [sic]."

Chris was charged with felony assault for beating then-girlfriend Rihanna the evening before the Grammy Awards in 2009. He plead guilty, and was sentenced to five years probation and 1,400 hours of community service. Justin did not specify if the "mistake" he was referring to was about this charge.

Chris replied in the comments: "I love you man" Thank you for believing in me. Your star shines so bright and your heart is unmatched! You are a king but more importantly you were put here to inspire and create endless possibilities bro! Im with ya till the wheels fall off and when they do ... we gone get some new wheels."

It's unclear what prompted JB to share the post, though Brown has been facing push-back in the music industry as of late - last week Chvrches called out DJ Marshmello for working with him.

While Justin's post was met with some supportive comments - including some from Sean Kingston and The Game - the response from other followers was furious.

"A mistake???? Are you f*cking kidding me? Wow lost so much respect for JB," wrote one.

While many others commented: "DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IS NOT A MISTAKE."

"How belittling of you to say domestic violence is a mistake," echoed another, while a fourth questioned: "What if Rihanna was Hailey? Would you say the same?"

Justin hasn't responded to the criticism left by followers yet, but has kept the post up on his feed and the comments section on. Yikes.
