Love Island star Demi Jones has bravely opened up about her cancer battle, and her journey to diagnosis.

Demi, 22, was diagnosed with thyroid cancer last month, but had been undergoing investigations on the suspicious lump for some time.

In fact, tests to help investigate the cancer were delayed a whopping six times due to the pandemic.

Added to that, after two ultrasound scans, Demi was told not once but twice, that the lump in her neck was not cancer.

It was only after she pushed for a further test that doctors discovered the devastating news.

She told The Sun: "If I'd listened to the doctors then I might be sitting here now not knowing I had cancer inside me... The tests all came back completely clear. Even today I don't know why the ultrasound didn't show anything.

"... Pretty much as soon as I had walked in the consultant said, 'We're really sorry. We think it could be thyroid cancer. We need this cut out of you as quickly as possible'."

Demi had first noticed the lump in January 2019 when she was just 20.

Busy with university, Demi had mentioned it to her mum a few months later - who insisted she had it checked out. After an ultrasound scan and a blood test, Demi was told it was a harmless nodule.

But following her stint on Love Island, Demi noticed the lump had grown in size, and made another appointment. Again she was referred, but due to the pandemic, her appointment was pushed back six times over seven months.

When the appointment finally came, tests again didn't indicate anything suspicious. Demi pushed for more investigations and doctors suggested draining fluid from the lump and sending it to be tested, something she saw as simply "an extra precaution".

Sadly, the test revealed it could be cancer, and Demi was immediately scheduled for surgery to remove the lump.

Three weeks later and it was confirmed that the lump was a slow growing and treatable papillary thyroid cancer. Demi is now waiting for surgery to remove her entire thyroid.

"When you're my age you assume you will live until you're 80. This has made me appreciate everything so much more," she added.
