Chrissy Teigen and John Legend made the heartbreaking announcement that they had lost their baby on Wednesday night.

The Ordinary People singer, 41, and the former model, 34, made an emotional announcement on social media, revealing they were "shocked" and suffering "deep pain" at their loss.

Chrissy previously told fans she had been taken to hospital after experiencing excessive bleeding during her pregnancy, telling them she was scared, but remained hopeful.

However, the Twitter favourite later confirmed she had lost the baby in a statement, writing: "We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we've never felt before.

"We were never able to stop the bleeding and give our baby the fluids he needed, despite bags and bags of blood transfusions. It just wasn't enough."

Chrissy shared the news alongside a black and white picture of herself crying in her hospital bed.

Revealing the name of their late son, she went on: "We never decide on our babies' names until the last possible moment after they're born, just before we leave the hospital.

"But we, for some reason, had started to call this little guy in my belly Jack. So he will always be Jack to us. Jack worked so hard to be a part of our little family, and he will be, forever."

She added: "To our Jack - I'm so sorry that the first few moments of your life were met with so many complications, that we couldn't give you the home you needed to survive. We will always love you."

Chrissy went on to thank everybody for their "positive energy, thoughts and prayers," adding that she would now be taking some time to grieve.

"We are so grateful for the life we have, for our wonderful babies Luna and Miles, for all the amazing things we've been able to experience," she said.

"But everyday can't be full of sunshine. On this darkest of days, we will grieve, we will cry our eyes out. But we will hug and love each other harder and get through it."

Heartbreakingly, Chrissy later tweeted: "Driving home from the hospital with no baby. How can this be real."

John Legend simply shared Chrissy's tweet announcing the sad news, and wrote: "We love you, Jack."

The pair were subsequently flooded with messages of support from devastated fans, who thanked the duo for being so honest about their painful journey.

Chrissy and John revealed they were expecting a third child in August, after previously having suffered fertility issues.

The pair are also parents to Luna, four, and Myles, two, who they conceived through IVF.
