Cara Delevingne opted to wear a top hat and tails to Princess Eugenie's wedding on Friday, but experts say she broke protocol by her choice of attire.

Despite the invite for the wedding asking women to 'wear a day dress and hat', Cara instead opted for the fitted suit but this isn't the only rule she 'broke'.

According to etiquette experts Debrett's, she also dodged guidelines by wearing her hat while entering the church.

Debrett's states on its website: "A grey or black top hat is worn with morning dress for racing but at most other events it is carried rather than worn and may be dispensed with."

Basically, you can only wear the hat if you're going to the races, and you have to carry it anywhere else.

The 26-year-old chose an Emporio Armani tuxedo complete with a cropped jacket, slim-fitting trousers, a cummerbund, a white button-up shirt, and a patterned grey tie.

She finished the outfit off with a pair of black stilettos and a match hanging from her mouth.

However, Royal expert James Brookes suggested Cara was not breaking protocol but just showing off her "eye-catching creativity".

He told The Express: "I don't think Cara's choice of outfit was 'breaking royal protocol'.

"Obviously it's unusual and not something you'd usually expect at a wedding, but the majority of the guests - and all of the main bridal party - wore traditional wedding attire.

"That's why Cara's outfit stood out as most of the other women were wearing dresses and heels, but when you invite Hollywood's A-listers and the modelling stars, you do expect a bit of eye-catching creativity."

He also raised another point, that Princess Eugenie does appreciate a good hat.

James said: "Remember Eugenie and Beatrice are well-known for their own creative choices when it comes to fashion - think back to those hats at William and Kate's wedding and Beatrice's dress at Meghan and Harry's - so I'm sure Eugenie might have expected a few 'different' outfits."

Cara and Princess Eugenie became friends through the London social circles, it is also reported Cara attended the princess' 25th birthday party in 2015.

The princess also made a few deliberate fashion choices for her wedding dress.

The beautiful white Peter Pilotto gown had a gorgeous low v-neck back, which proudly showed off Eugenie's scar from an operation she had aged 12.

Eugenie was reportedly keen to show off her scar, which is as a result of an operation she had to correct her scoliosis.

Earlier this week, Eugenie explained her decision on ITV's This Morning, telling hosts Philip Schofield and Holly Willoughby: "I had an operation when I was 12 on my back, and you'll see on Friday [at the wedding], but it's a lovely way to honour the people who looked after me and a way of standing up for young people who also go through this.

"I think you can change the way beauty is, and you can show people your scars and I think it's really special to stand up for that."
