People Are Warning Against This Voicemail Trick For If You're Ever In Trouble

Everyone needs to remember this.

People are warning against a viral 'voicemail trick' for if you ever find yourself in trouble.

Shared on social media, the advice involves changing your voicemail greeting to include vital information about your location and situation - but people online are warning against it.

"If you are ever lost while hiking, get stranded with a broken down car etc and you notice your phone is either low on juice or has no signal, here is a tip that may very well save your life," the advice explains.

"Change the voicemail on your phone to a message that gives your approximate location, the time, the date, your situation (lost, out of gas, car broken down, injured etc) and any special instructions such as you are staying with the car, you are walking towards town etc.

"The best part of this is that even if your cell phone dies or stops working, voicemail still works, so anyone calling your phone looking for you will hear the message and know where to find you or where to send help."

While it might sound straightforward, many people are pointing out the flaws in the advice.

For example, several people commented on how you can only change your voicemail greeting if you have signal - and if you have signal and need urgent help, you should be contacting the emergency services.

Others pointed out that if you are hiking, for example, you could easily change your location a number of times (which means the location in your voicemail message may not be accurate).

Meanwhile, some explained that sending a text message would be a better idea - as it uses less battery than changing your voicemail message or sending a voice note.

It's best to switch your phone on to aeroplane mode while you compose, before taking it off to send to your most trusted contacts.

Ultimately, if you are in an emergency situation, always use what battery you have left to ring 999 and alert family or friends.
