In a world where iPhones are being developed every other minute and driverless cars being tested, there has been surprisingly little progress in devices for those visually impaired.
Good news then that Kursat Ceylan, CEO and co-founder of Young Guru Academy, has developed a 'smart cane' which is designed to aid those short of sight in going about their daily lives.
Being blind himself, he was determined to create a device that made good use of the technology that already exists.
In an interview with CNN, Ceylan explained: "These days, we are talking about flying cars, but these people have been using just a plain stick."

"As a blind person, when I am at the Metro station, I don't know which is my exit... I don't know which bus is approaching... which stores are around me. That kind of information can be provided with the WeWalk," he continued.
The instrument costs about £400 and is available to buy online.
The device is equipped with built-in speakers and can be linked to your phone through the WeWALK app. By doing this, the user is able to access their phone through the cane. Of particular note, is the ability to use Google Maps which will help the user get around without the need to take out their phone.

The WeWALK is also fitted with sensors that can detect obstacles above chest level. These will cause the stick to vibrate should the person come across anything that blocks their path.
Also integrated into the device is a voice assistant which will help guide users when travelling on public transport.
Currently based in Turkey, the company hopes to keep on growing in order for the product to reach as many people as possible.

Ceylan also hopes to develop the device even more by eventually partnering with ride-sharing and transportation companies.
