"Don't be that person."

A mum has sparked a furious debate online after revealing she planned to wear a white dress to her friend's wedding.

Taking to Mumsnet to ask whether she could get away with it, the anonymous wedding guest wrote: "I've just purchased this dress for a charity event I have to attend but I am hoping it will double up for an upcoming wedding due to the cost and I am having to have the dress altered and taken in slightly so would be nice to get more than one wear out of it.

"It will only be the evening reception I am attending. It will be paired with black shoes and a black bag and the bottom of the dress is like a taupe colour."

Despite her justifications, the woman was inundated with comments from Mumsnet users who complimented the dress, but advised her to save it for another occasion.

One user commented: "Absolutely not. It's lovely, but not for a wedding. Just don't be that person."

"Nice dress but sorry no. It's the wrong colour," another added. "It would actually make a really nice wedding dress for a casual do, but this is why you can't wear it."

The anonymous woman also said would probably only be at the occasion for "two hours max", before adding: "I don't think the bride will mind but I'm more concerned about other guests' opinions."

But, the people of Mumsnet weren't having any of it, with one user simply commenting:"If it was any other colour it would be fine. But white to somebody else's wedding a NO."

Another reasoned: "If you ask the bride, you're putting he in a very difficult situation, especially if she knows you've already bought it.

"I think it's too close to cream/ivory to wear to a wedding and I'd have been annoyed if you wore it to mine."

Who knew all these rules still existed?
