You could call it a match made in heaven.

We just love a happy ending, and nothing brings us as much joy as seeing an animal find their forever home - especially if they've been waiting a while.

This was exactly the case with 13-year-old Dachshund mix Jack, who'd been a resident at the Pennsylvania SPCA animal centre in Danville, USA, suffering from dental disease, a heart murmur, and "typical old man lumps and bumps".

That was until Friday 25th October when an elderly gentleman walked into the shelter and asked specifically to see and old dog in need of a home.

Management at the shelter paired him with Jack, and instantly, the man said: "He's perfect, I'll take him" and asked for a vet recommendation.

Incredibly, the pooch then jumped up on the kind adopters lap and fell asleep as they waited for paperwork to be completed, as if he knew instantly that he'd found his forever home.

We're not crying you are.

Pennsylvania SPCA shared the story on Facebook, with photos of the sweet moment, and it's since received over 50,000 likes and 40,000 shares.

The post read: "Yesterday, this gentleman wandered in the shelter and asked to see an old dog in need of a home. We paired him with Jack; a 13 year old dachshund mix who has dental disease, a heart murmur, and typical old man lumps/bumps. He said, 'He's perfect, I'll take him. What vet do you recommend I take him too?'

"Jack curled up on his lap and caught a nap while they both patiently waited for the paperwork to be processed. This is what animal welfare is all about. Falling in love, giving second chances to those who need it most, and finding the heroes in humanity. Happy tails Jack! We couldn't be happier for you!"

The story clearly tugged at the heartstrings of the shelter's animal-loving followers, who commented in their droves.

"This tears me up. I love seeing older dogs get happy homes. They deserve love just as much as the puppies," wrote one person.

"I think older people need to be paired with elderly dogs, waive adoption fees they need each other," suggested another.

"Omg this story made me cry! Thank you for sharing! This is true humanity! We need to do more of this instead of disposing of our damaged, aged, and broken both in the animal and human world! Thank you good sir for reminding us of the joy this can bring to everyone involved!" shared a third.

"This gentleman is a man after my own heart, I also adopted a senior dog. Congratulations Jack on finding your furever home," said a fourth who'd similarly adopted old.

"Thank you for adopting this precious older dog and give him a chance to a good life he's beautiful and looks sooo comfortable and relaxed god bless you both," thanked another.

It seems these two found their perfect match. Consider the cockles of our hearts officially warmed.
