Shopkeeper and grandmother of three June Turner was behind the till at AJ and J Newsagents in Hanley, Staffs, when a robber burst in with their face hidden behind a big blue blanket.
But the she wasn't having any of it, as she pulled out her walking stick and started whacking him repeatedly with it.
Poor June ended up with a black eye after going for the robber, and was left on the floor, where she remained until a customer came in and called the police and paramedics.
But her brave retaliation meant that the robber only managed to grab £50 and six packets of cigarettes before they fled.
Speaking about her response to the robbery, June - who has worked in the newsagent for 45 years - said: "I went hell for leather on him.
"I think he was quite shocked. He wasn't expecting that. I bet he thought, 'She's getting on a bit'.
"He came up to the counter and said, 'I want your money' but I said, 'You're not having my money'. He came round the back of the counter and got some money from the till.
"I couldn't find the panic button so I got my stick and I really belted him with it.
"It was just instinct to try to stop him and give him a good whack.
"He pushed me to the floor and I was worried in case I broke my hip as I had a replacement a few years ago and I didn't want to go through that again. And then he rushed out like the clappers."
And the best thing? Despite the trauma of the ordeal, sturdy June was back serving customers after just half an hour.
"If it happened again I'd react the same but with something heavier," she added.
Don't get on the wrong side of June!
