A helpless dog owner was forced to leave their pet at an animal centre alongside a heartbreaking note explaining why they couldn't look after her anymore.

Despite loving our pets more than anything, sometimes situations can change with owners finding themselves in positions where they can no longer care for their beloved animals.

Instead of abandoning their dog on the street, this owner took their dog to a shelter to help find her a new home and family that could care for her better.

The note left with the pooch explained that the owner had been made homeless and could no longer afford to feed or look after her.

Sky the terrier mix was taken to the Delaware Humane Association in Wilmington, United States, on Wednesday along with the note.

The six-year-old terrier's owner wrote: "Please take care of Sky.

"She is 6 years old and friendly. I couldn't take care of her. I became homeless and couldn't feed her.

"She is not sick, just hungry, very friendly. Please find her a home. Please."

After the dog was left at the centre, staff took Sky in and posted a heartbreaking update on social media.

They wrote: "With each New Year comes new challenges and on our second day in, we welcomed one of our most heartbreaking souls yet.

"This skinny-mini's name is Sky and she was discovered yesterday morning by one of our easy-going dogs, who barked alarmingly at one of the normally uneventful corners of our property.

"This blue and white chocolate dipped girl was roaming freely with an incredibly oversized, spiked leather harness with a bag attached and a note inside."

The post continued: "While we have all the questions in the world, we are just thankful this sweetheart made it to us before it was too late.

"We can't imagine this was easy for her former owner, so please refrain from expressing any negative thoughts you may have."

Staff at the centre weighed Sky and found she was around 20 pounds underweight.

Kerry Flanagan Bruni, director of animal care at the centre, spoke to Delaware Online about the pooch.

She said: "It appears just to be that she wasn't being fed the proper amount. She's very sweet, very friendly."

The abandoned dog was also covered in fleas, so tapeworms and anemia could also be contributing to her weight loss.

Since finding Sky, the centre has opened up a donation page for her - all you have to do is add "Sky's the limit" in the comments section to make sure your money goes straight to the dog.
