Boris Johnson Says Big Weddings Could Be Back To Normal By Easter

The coronavirus pandemic has seen a number of planned events for 2020 put on hold, with festivals, parties and weddings postponed in the foreseeable future.

However, as England now starts to emerge from its second month-long lockdown, many who were scheduled to tie the knot this year are wondering when they can have the large-scale day of their dreams that they had initially planned.

In the People's Prime Minister's Questions that was held yesterday, wedding venue owner (and bride-to-be herself) Lara asked when the wedding industry, which has been hit especially hard by the pandemic, can start to recover.

And Prime Minister Boris Johnson finally had some good news for those planning their nuptials - promising things could be back to normal for those getting married as soon as Easter.

"As we roll out community testing, and get better at understand how people respond to it and how it works, [normality] is very much is on the cards," he explained.

Boris added that he believed the recent news of the coronavirus vaccine, which is scheduled to be rolled out as soon as next week to some people, will be a huge aid in helping large events take place.

"Mass testing, combined with the growth of the number of people being vaccinated before Easter, and lateral flow testing...will allow events like wedding to go ahead," he said.

"If you're thinking about the summer, I think you'll be alright. It's my strong hope and belief, by the summer, whether by one way or the other, whether by vaccination which I hope and believe we would have delivered by Easter, or by lateral flow testing, we'll be in a different world.

"My hope is by summer, it really will be a different world for the weddings and events industry. And I hope that your potential customers will be full of confidence and optimism as well, and will be getting hitched in the normal well.

He added: "I think mass testing will help before Easter, hopefully well before Easter, but I think you should be able to plan for a really more active summer, and lots of happy nuptial events all over the UK."

Currently, coronavirus regulations stipulate those who live in Tier 1 or Tier 2 areas can have only 15 people attend a wedding reception - and those who live in Tier 3 cannot have any reception at all.

The restrictions have seen many couples looking to marry now resorting to having Zoom parties so all their family and friends can be present in some form for the big day.

The Prime Minister himself is also due to get wed, after getting engaged to his partner Carrie Symonds in February this year.
