The world is still reeling from the mass shooting that took place in a Texas Walmart on Saturday, but one viral photo has shown a glimmer of humanity in the dark.

After the shooting in the El Paso supermarket, which left 20 dead and 26 injured, authorities said there was an urgent need for blood donations.

A photo taken inside the Vitalant blood bank in Lubbock show the people of El Paso responding to the crisis in their droves.

The theme was the same in blood donation centres across the city, with people tweeting about scenes showing queues out the door.

One video, posted on Twitter, shows the busy situation at one clinic. "This video I took was from inside the blood bank, there were people lining up outside in 101 degree heat and still more were arriving to help," wrote the local.

"El Paso takes care of our own, this is the real El Paso."

There were reports that the El Paso blood bank was at maximum capacity, as well as in Albuquerque.

On Saturday 3rd August, just after 10.30am local time, police were called to reports of an active shooter in a packed Walmart in the El Paso County city.

A gunman entered the shop and started unloading at families and children, it what is now being classed as the eighth deadliest mass shooting in modern US history.

The shooter is thought to be 21-year-old Patrick Crusius, from Allen, Texas, who is believed to be the author of a racist, anti-Hispanic document detailing his motivations for the shooting.

Emotional support dogs have also been called in to aid witnesses and first responders.
