Astronomers, set your alarms for this weekend as there's going to be a snow moon on Saturday morning!

The incredible celestial experience will be visible in the UK at 8:17am on Saturday 27th February and it's worth getting up early for.

A snow moon is a type of full moon and will only be full for just a moment, in a time period known as 'syzygy'. Syzygy happens when Earth comes exactly between the moon and the sun, reflecting the maximum amount of sunlight.

But great news - if you miss it on Saturday morning, the moon will still appear full and bright to the naked eye for a few nights afterwards.

So, where does a snow moon get its name from? Typically a snow moon represents the snow on the ground around this time of year and symbolises the beginning of spring, and it is thought that this is how it gets its name.

NASA add: "The Maine Farmer's Almanac first published Indian names for the full moons in the 1930's, and according to this almanac, this was known as the snow moon because of the heavy snows that fall in this season."

So, what is the best way to view this month's snow moon?

Firstly, get up to high ground if you can. The higher - and the further away from light pollution - you are, the more chance you'll have of seeing the snow moon.

Secondly, make sure your lights are off, so it's easier to see the sky. Artificial lights can interfere with visibility, so make sure that wherever you're watching the snow moon from is as dark as possible.

And, if you miss this one, a worm moon can be seen in British skies on Sunday 28th March.
