British festivals: we love them, but we don't love getting caked in mud.

And this has been the case at this year's Download Festival which, despite being due to begin this weekend, has seen people flee due to "biblical" rain showers.

People who have spent nearly £200 on a ticket to attend have already upped and gone home after arriving to a mud bath on Friday.

Bad weather in the area has left the Donington Park-based festival in Leicestershire with "ridiculous mud".

One reveller who decided to pack up and go home was Samantha Gibben. She told The Metro: "We had a perfectly watertight tent. Nothing was leaking.

"But left because of the mud. It's that bad less than a day in. I'll never survive. My hips were dislocating from slipping on the mud as we walked in even with wellies. I can't handle it."

One festival-goer told the paper she spent over £600 on her festival experience but had to head home. She told the paper: "We travelled home last night, got in at 4am... gutted is an understatement for how I feel about leaving.

"We couldn't have afforded a hotel, we couldn't afford to drive home and then back up today.

"We wanted to save ourselves, our clothes, our belongings before they got drenched and ruined. We only had a single skin tent (our fault completely) which honestly didn't help but I've seen that even double skin tents have been having issues."

But of course, most were not letting a bit of mud ruin their festival.

Download Festival themselves tweeted: "Amazing that all of you got in and set up despite the Biblical rain we had! No one is tougher than you guys."

To those that are partying on rain or shine, we salute you.
