A woman was shocked and horrified when she found out she had buried a dead rabbit in her garden after mistaking it for her family's cat.

Cheryl Schmidt, 63, from Indiana, was devastated when she found what she thought was her beloved seven-year-old cat, named Kitty, at the side of the road.

To give her the send off she deserved, Cheryl held an emotional ceremony for Kitty, before burying her in the garden.

But the family were both confused and alarmed when Kitty later showed up at the house. Realising they had buried a different animal, they quickly dug up what they assumed was another cat and took it to the vet, to try and reunite it with its owner.

But they were horrified when they realised it was actually a rabbit.

Cheryl's son Eric said: "My dad text me and my sister saying that the cat had gone missing and that we should make sure our mum was ok.

"Then he text us saying she'd found the cat dead at the end of the road and it had been run over.

"She put it in a plastic bag so she didn't have to look at it. She wishes she'd given it a better look before she did that.

"She was pretty upset so my sister called to console her. Then he text saying he'd buried the cat but our actual cat had turned up at the house, so my mum had gone from being devastated to being overjoyed.

"The next day, my mum dug up the cat and took it to the vet to see if it was micro chipped and they said it was actually a rabbit."

Eric explained although his mum had asked him not to tell anyone, he had already shared the story on Twitter, with the tweet racking up nearly 800,000 likes.

"My mum asked me not to tell anyone, but I'd already screenshotted the messages and put them on Twitter," he continued.

"It blew up and it was so unexpected. It's so funny because people think it's fake. We'd need to hire a forensic detective and dig it back up."

Eric explained that the vet had offered to cremate the rabbit, but Cheryl decided to give it another send off, and re-buried it in the garden.

What. A. Rollercoaster!
