Don't ask us why, but some people are choosing to remember this unprecedented time by giving their dogs 'lockdown' inspired names.

Yep, as if we needed any more constant reminders of Covid-19, some have given their new pups monikers that reference the pandemic - from Boris to Zoom.

According to a survey by Yappy.com, the name Boris had increased in popularity by a whopping 325 per cent, with many choosing to name their pooch after the UK's Prime Minister.

Meanwhile, the name Zoom is up 75 per cent, with many paying tribute to the hours they've spent playing quizzes and virtually socialising online.

Meanwhile, Big Mac (56 per cent) Whopper (48 per cent) and Waffles (16 per cent) have also become more commonly used, perhaps due to people's fast food consumption over the last few months...

The lockdown inspired names shouldn't come as a surprise, given the number of dogs adopted during the crisis.

Online searches for the term "buy a puppy" increased by 120 per cent during March, when lockdown took hold, according to the Dogs Trust.

The charity said it had received "an overwhelming number of enquiries... not only to rehome dogs permanently but also to foster our dogs on a temporary basis".

However, they added that people should think carefully before making the commitment.

"Dog ownership is a wonderful thing but it is a lifelong commitment which must be carefully considered," they said.

"As our saying goes, 'a dog is for life' and, in this case, not just for self-isolation".
