Cineworld has revealed its plans to reopen its 127 cinemas in May, in line with the government's roadmap.

From 17th May - aka Step 3 - cinemas, theatres and restaurants are expected to re-open under certain restrictions.

It's believed social distancing restrictions in cinemas will still have to be adhered to, with venues limited to a capacity of 1,000 people and no more than 50 per cent of seats taken.

Cineworld bosses have also explained they are opening cinemas in America under its Regal brand, as early as 2nd April.

Chief executive Mooky Greidinger said: "We have long-awaited this moment when we can welcome audiences back to our Regal theatres and restore our essential role within the communities we serve.

"With capacity restrictions expanding to 50 per cent or more across most US states, we will be able to operate profitably in our biggest markets.

"We will also be monitoring developments closely in the UK and across Europe as we set to gradually reopen across the world in line with local government guidance."

Cineworld bosses have also revealed a deal has been struck with Warner Bros that gives the cinema chain exclusive rights to show films over streaming services.

It would mean the studio's films would be shown in cinemas 31 days prior to them being made available on premium video on demand (PVOD) platforms.

The agreement follows fears from cinemas that since the pandemic - and with the world getting used to watching new releases at home - fewer people would head to theatres.

"This agreement shows the studio's commitment to the theatrical business and we see this agreement as an important milestone in our 100-year relationship with Warner Bros," Mr Greidinger added.

Although cinemas cannot open before 17th May, drive in, outdoor cinemas will open from 12th April. Last week, we told you how Luna Cinema's drive-in screenings will return from 12th April at sites across the country, including Blenheim Palace, Knebworth House, the Birmingham NEC and Bluewater in Kent, with more venues to be added soon.

And Luna is set to celebrate the anniversary of some cult classics, including 25 years of Romeo + Juliet, 20 years of Legally Blonde and 35 years of Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

They'll also be showing other classics such as The Goonies, Grease, Back to the Future and Dirty Dancing.
