A bride-to-be has caused a debate after she took to Facebook to insist that her nine-year-old step-daughter wear spanx to her wedding.

The anonymous woman explained on the social media site that she was struggling to find a dress to fit her soon to be step-daughter and asked for suggestions on where to find something suitable.

"She's a thick girl," she posted. "I have tried 'big girl youth sizes' and nothing fits her."

"I can't really go to her mum because (of) the typical new woman situation."

After finding one dress she liked, the bride-to-be wasn't happy with its fit on her step-daughter and returned to Facebook to ask advice on what to do.

She wrote: "Definitely not a body-shaming post, but how do y'all feel about a nine-year-old wearing a body shaper (girdle)."

"She's a plus-size kid. And her dress is a little snug. I figured why not try a body shaper to smooth out some of the edges to give that perfect fit."

"The dress cannot be taken out. And it is only snug in the waist area. Everything else fits perfectly. Wedding is five days away," she added.

According to Kidspot, the woman received a lot of criticism for her post and subsequently deleted it.

While some people pointed out that she could just go and buy another dress, others were shocked by the bride-to-be's admission.

One commenter posted: "This right here is one of the main reasons girls have low self-esteem. If their mothers don't accept them, who will?"

"I can't even begin to imagine the long term ramifications that are going to have on that child. I want to cry," said another, while a third remarked: "Why people are so reluctant to buy the size that fits their kid. Stop taking your body issues out on your kids. It really messes them up."

Meanwhile, another pointed out that the child was still very young and that putting her in spanx could cause body issues down the line.

"For a nine-year-old? That is a child. That's how teenagers end up with eating disorders and body dysmorphia," they wrote.

And another was quite adamant that the poster should not put the child in spanx.

"She's nine. It's never OK to put a child in Spanx - ever. End of story," they commented.
