The aptly named Chillingham Castle, in Northumberland, has been dubbed the most haunted castle in the UK thanks to the number of spooky encounters reported by guests.

According to online broker, Mojo Mortgages, who analysed the number of castle mentions in 'most haunted' articles online, as well as ghoulish sightings in TripAdvisor reviews, Chillingham has come out on top.

The castle dates back to the 12th century and has remained in the same family ever since. Even today, much of the mediaeval castle remains as it was, with galleries added in Tudor times as well as re-landscaped, extravagant gardens.

It even has a torture chamber... yep, we told you - not for the faint hearted.

With a number of bedrooms available to book, prices start at £100 per night for a two person apartment - aka The Guard Room where the relief watchmen would once sleep, awaiting their turn on guard.

There's also the Dairy Apartment, which sleeps six and was once a series of bedrooms belonging to the dairy maids.

Meanwhile the Coaching Rooms - which also sleep six - definitely look like they could be home to a few ghouls. In these apartments, the castle explain "friends stopping for a break from the fierce coaching routines would have rested from the exhaustions of the road".

But you'll need to be pretty fearless to stay here, with the castle having some of the highest levels of paranormal activity across the country.

Just take a look at some of these TripAdvisor reviews...

One guest said: "We did get some activity and the ghost of Eleanor visited us... she admitted to rattling our wardrobe door and blowing in my friends ear."

Meanwhile another said "frightening is an understatement" explaining they had to cancel their third night because they were so scared.

"Six of us stayed in the coaching house. Upon arrival there was an odd feeling but all OK. We went on a ghost tour and ended up having met two spirits, one called Mary the other a young child Elenor.

"They spoke to us for 20 minutes each via dousing sticks. This was not scary at all. So happily we went off to stay back in the coaching house. First night was fine. However then the fun began. Like so many others report in the guest book the second night is always active to the point you want to run for your lives.

"Some of the things we encountered: Someone sitting on my leg, someone holding someone's hand, two of us being pushed several times, doors opening and closing, cupboard doors opening and closing. Lights going off.

"You may find the archway in the corridor very very cold as we found this is where they hang about in an area no more than a few foot.

"We had booked for three nights but the second night all six of slept in the front room and duly left at day light giving the third night a miss."

Well, if we do stay we'll probably steer clear of the Coaching Rooms! To book your stay you can visit the website here.

There's still some availability on Halloween, but you'll need to be quick if you fancy snapping up a spooky stay!
