People are going wild over a new cleaning 'hack' that uses a dishwasher tablet to clean your washing machine - and the pictures of it in action are showing just how dirty our machines really are.

Seriously, it's so disgusting how grim your machine is - who knew?
It makes sense we suppose. Day in day out we pile our machines high with clothes that have been covered in food particles, sweat, dirt and sometimes even (parents of young kids will relate) faecal matter when little ones have had those accidents.
When you think about it, it really is no surprise.
So when a mum from Australian Facebook group Mums Who Clean shared a hack, that sees her pop a dishwasher tablet into the washer drum on a hot wash to rid it of dirt, people were quick to also try the idea.

One of her snaps posted to the group shows disgustingly dirty water and she captioned it: "This is only 5 minutes into the dishwater tablet hack," she wrote, adding, "I'm disgusted yet impressed."
People were all over the idea, with one commenting: "Doing the four dishwasher tablets in my basic top loader washing machine on very hot water (I only use cold or warm water usually)," according to News.com.au.
Adding: "This is five minutes in and I can see little scummy particles and the water is definitely brownish. Gross but satisfying."

But it isn't the first time this hack has been trialled.
Jottie's Journal took to Instagram back in 2017 to explain the idea: "I tried a dishwasher tab in the washing machine thanks to @mrshayliesaley. I placed in the drum and put it through a hot wash. Smelt so fresh afterwards and even my clothes washed better @ilove2clean".
People were quick to thank the blogger for inspiring them, one said: "Love the tips you give on here definitely gonna try this one!"
Another said: "Thanks. This seems like an amazing way to clean the washer since after time they tend to get a funky smell."

More recently a Twitter user shared her thoughts on the tip doing the rounds: "And my washing machine is SO sparkly after trying out your tip to run a dishwasher tablet through it!"
So whilst it sounds like it works, considering dishwasher tablets are made for, well, the dishwasher, Tyla was unsure whether the hack was actually safe to try at home.
It might remove dirt and grime, but that's no good if it breaks your machine afterwards, is it?

So firstly we spoke to Lauren Clark, AO.com's large appliance Trading Director, who comments: "Whilst dishwasher tablets are unlikely to cause harm to your appliance, it is essential to follow the manufacturer instructions on cleaning the machine as these can vary dependant on the model and type, and many will now advise of a certain cycle or drum cleaning program to do this."
She's certainly right in terms of checking each appliance's instructions as Bosch firmly advises against the idea.
It says on its website: "You might think that using dishwasher tablets might also work in the washing machine.

"Cleaning the washing machine with dishwasher tabs is not a good idea and we advise against it strongly."
So make sure you check the manual folks.
