But remember, looks are only skin - or fur - deep.

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but what if it turns out that you're the mirror image of your, er, pet pooch?

We're about to find out, because the team at Canine Cottages - a provider of dog-friendly holidays across the UK - asked dog owners up and down the country to submit a photo of themselves and their four-legged friend.

The goal? To find the ultimate lookalike 'dogpelgangers'. Woof.

Competition submissions have now been assessed by a panel of dog-loving judges to collate a top 50. The public can cast votes for their favourite pairings at the competition website by clicking on the love heart icons.

The winner will be announced on 28th October, taking home the prize of a £500 holiday voucher.

One glance at the site reveals that there are some strong contenders. Among our frontrunners are Lucy and her Dalmatian Leo, who know how to rock a spotty coat and love working a chic monochrome colour scheme.

Oh, and who can forget Wendy and her devoted canine pal Frank, both of whom take inspiration from the volumised, back-combed barnets of the 80s. Work it guys.

From the male contestants, twin red heads Chris and Bernie like to accentuate their jawlines with impressive auburn manes.

Meanwhile, silver fox Adrien-Paul coordinates his beard with the wolf-like coat of his aptly-named furry friend Thunder.

Why do we so often look like our pets, though? Do we develop shared traits over time thanks to intense bonds, like an ageing couple, or is there some kind of owner-pet narcissism at play here?

Whatever the reason, pop culture loves an owner-pooch lookalike duo. 101 Dalmatians features an entire opening scene based around the idea, and last year animal portrait photographer Gerrard Gethings had his Do You Look Like Your Dog? photo series turned into a hilarious card memory game.

So, bring on the competition. Let the fur fly.

But remember folks, looks are only skin - or fur - deep.
